Traditional Elegance
Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol

This courtyard garden is viewed from most of the house so had to reflect the elegant interior.

The original paving was incorporated into the design, simply removing a line of paving against the beautiful stone wall to create a slim planting border in which to plant instant box hedging.

Cretan terracotta pots compliment the stone walls and paving perfectly. They are planted with a balanced combination of lonicera, box and bay topiary. The bay provides a contrasting leaf size and echoes the large bay tree in a neighbouring garden. Shallow terracotta pots are planted with simple seasonal flowers and herbs for the kitchen.

The beautiful parterre garden houses a large bay cone as its centre piece. Such a traditional country garden element looks stunning in this urban courtyard.

Uplighters have been positioned to illuminate the wonderful stone walls and create atmospheric topiary shadows after dark.

The garden is beautiful in its simplicity and will change subtly over the seasons. Trailing thyme may be added to the base of the topiary trees and the design allows flexibility to add further flowers inside the box borders if desired.
